Enforce Existing Speed Limits on Warnham Road, Horsham
The Issue
For at least the past five years, excessive speeding has been a daily occurrence on this road, far exceeding the 30mph limit. This disregard for the laws is creating an ongoing risk to pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and nearby residents. Despite repeated concerns being raised with local representatives, little has changed.
As a local resident, I have raised this issue with John Milne MP, Horsham District Council, and through Operation Crackdown, West Sussex's reporting scheme for anti-social driving. Unfortunately, Operation Crackdown requires details such as a vehicle registration number and make, which are often impossible to obtain safely when a vehicle is travelling at excessive speed. This means many dangerous incidents go unreported despite posing a genuine risk to public safety.
The dangers are not hypothetical. I have personally witnessed:
- A road traffic collision on this road.
- A vehicle mounting the pavement near the Co-op in order to overtake a car that was turning into the store.
Had a pedestrian been on the pavement at that moment, the consequences could have been fatal.
Speeding occurs every day and is particularly severe during the evening and night. It is not uncommon to witness vehicles—including heavy goods vehicles—travelling at what appears to be well in excess of 50 mph, despite the road's speed limit. The volume and frequency of these incidents suggest that existing measures are not acting as an effective deterrent.
We are therefore calling for:
- Increased speed enforcement by Sussex Police.
- A formal review of traffic speeds on this road.
- The installation of permanent or mobile speed monitoring equipment.
- Consideration of additional traffic calming measures where appropriate.
- A coordinated response from Horsham District Council, West Sussex County Council, and Sussex Police to improve road safety.
This is not simply about reducing speed—it is about preventing serious injury or loss of life before another avoidable incident occurs.
