Stop Flow of Dakota Access Pipeline

The Issue

Treaties with Native Americans have been repeatedly broken throughout American history. The United States has repeatedly encroached on Indian reservations, disregarding Native American's sovereignty and land agreements. Still, today, the United States treats Native Americans like second class citizens. In 2017, construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline compromised the Standing Rock Sioux's sovereignty, as Energy Transfer Partners(who constructed Dakota Access Pipeline) were not given permission to build through the Sioux's Reservation. Worse, an oil spill from the pipeline would contaminate the Sioux's water supply, jeopardizing the Sioux's health.

Oil spills are inevitable. Since 1986, more than 3,000,000 gallons of oil have been spilled across pipelines in the United States alone. It is only a matter of time until an oil spill contaminates the Sioux's water supply.

In the interest of being faithful to the treaties of a marginalized group, and to prevent contamination of the Standing Rock Sioux's water supply, we urge Energy Transfer Partners (Energy Transfer Operating L.P.) to stop the flow of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
