End Unverified Package Deliveries on Uber Eats
The Issue
I inadvertently helped a scammer steal 15 grand from an elder woman.
It was a normal package delivery just like any other or so I thought.
Weeks later, I sat with detectives trying to jog my memory and figure out who I delivered the bag full of money to. Unfortunately, I wasn’t much help as I didn’t remember anything from that delivery that could help detectives get closer to finding the culprit.
This is exactly why I have always felt iffy about package deliveries. As drivers, we do not decide what orders we get beyond accepting what is offered, and we are not going to open somebody else's package just to investigate it. That is not ethical, and it should never be put on us in the first place. But right now, Uber's package delivery system can be used by scammers to prey on older people while drivers are left unknowingly carrying out part of the scheme.
Uber needs to shut down unverified package deliveries on Uber Eats until it can guarantee this service is not being used to move stolen cash and scam victims' money. Drivers should not be put in legal fear, and customers should not be exposed to a system that can be exploited this easily. If Uber wants to offer this kind of delivery, then the company needs real safeguards, real verification, and real accountability instead of leaving drivers and vulnerable people to deal with the fallout.
I am speaking up because I never want another driver to sit with detectives over a delivery they thought was routine, and I never want another older person targeted like this. This is not okay, and it is not just one bad order. Please sign this petition and help demand that Uber end unverified package deliveries on Uber Eats.
