The Issue

Living in Michigan, like millions of others, I rely on DTE Energy for my essential electric services. However, as a regulated utility monopoly, DTE Energy gives us no choice but to accept their terms or risk losing access to essential services. This lack of choice extends to the method of payment for our bills, accompanied by unreasonable processing fees.

DTE Energy imposes additional processing fees on certain payment methods, making it burdensome for its customers, especially when there are no alternative electricity providers available. These fees often appear as hidden rate increases, affecting those who can least afford it—low-income households, seniors, and families without access to fee-free payment options. This practice disproportionately impacts already struggling communities and cripples the ability of many to pay their monthly bills.

According to the Energy Information Administration, over 40% of American households struggle with monthly energy bills; the extra burden imposed by payment fees only exacerbates this issue. Furthermore, reports from utility regulatory bodies have highlighted the negative impact processing fees have on vulnerable populations. These fees not only inflate the cost of necessary services but act as a financial barrier to keeping essential utilities on.

Several states have enacted policies to prevent utility companies from charging excessive payment fees. For instance, California's Public Utilities Commission prohibits extra charges on payments made by credit card or debit card. Michigan must follow in the footsteps of other progressive states to protect its residents from unfair financial practices.

Our state officials have the power to demand that DTE Energy stop this unjust practice of imposing processing fees. By engaging with Michigan's Public Service Commission, steps can be taken to regulate payment methods fairly, avoiding unnecessary financial burdens on the populace.

It's crucial for Michigan residents to stand together to insist upon fair treatment from our utility providers. By signing this petition, we can urge the Michigan Public Service Commission and our legislative representatives to take action against these unfair payment practices, ensuring all residents have equitable access to essential services without undue financial strain.

Sign this petition to demand that DTE Energy eliminate these unjust payment processing fees and bring the focus back on providing fair, accessible, and affordable utility services for every Michigan resident.
