End Unelected Power: Call for Reform of the House of Lords!
The Issue
The way the House of Lords works affects everyone in the UK. Right now, the House of Lords is made up of people who are not elected by the public—many are appointed for life or inherit their positions. This means decisions about important laws and policies are being made by people who don’t have to answer to the people they are governing. This system makes many people feel disconnected from the government and undermines our democracy, where everyone should have a say in who represents them.
If nothing changes, the House of Lords will remain an undemocratic institution. This means that power will stay in the hands of unelected individuals, some of whom have inherited their titles. The public will continue to have no real influence on decisions that affect their lives. But if we reform the House of Lords and make it more accountable, it would mean decisions would be made by people the public can actually vote for. This would help restore trust in the government and make sure that the people we elect have the power to make the decisions that shape our country.
Now is the perfect time to make this change. People across the UK are calling for more accountability in government, and many want to see real democratic reforms. As young people become more involved in politics, they’re demanding a system that listens to them. This is our chance to push for change and create a political system that truly reflects the will of the people. If we don’t act now, we risk letting the House of Lords continue to operate without the public’s voice.
