End Traditional School Assemblies That Can Harm Students Wellbeing

The Issue

Whole school assemblies they are literally a harm to student physical and mental wellbeing. Many students sit on hard floors for long periods, often in hot, crowded places like outdoor areas or under limited shelter with insufficient room

In informal talks with students from different year levels and some teachers across NSW and Australia during the holidays while I was traveling to other states but I know Australia isn’t the only country facing this problem, common concerns have come up. These include excessive heat, discomfort from sitting on the floor, and overcrowding. These issues can cause physical strain, such as back pain, and increase stress.

During the holidays, I spoke with students across NSW.

Many said they do not dislike assemblies because of the speeches or content, but because of the conditions long durations, heat, and overcrowding. Several mentioned they would rather receive the same information in a classroom setting, where they could listen more comfortably and focus better. They then says “look at America they literally sing their national anthem in class and the principal makes an announcement through the intercom. Some student from schools with outdoor assemblies actually cheered when it rain but they wanted to hear some information from the principal.

Students described the environment as "too tight" and overwhelming. Some even reported feeling anxiety or discomfort in the settings. For some students, assemblies can trigger racing thoughts or feelings that make it hard to stay calm and engaged. Eg: intrusive thoughts mostly for late primary students and high schoolers

This issue is not about avoiding assemblies but about improving how they are run. A school environment should support student wellbeing and not make it harder for students to cope. It is important for students to feel heard and not have to hide their discomfort.

Keep this in mind I am writing as a student that is about to finish high school but I decided that “It hurts seeing student like that” it is time to modernise school assemblies not just in NSW but across the globe.

Hearing these experiences was concerning and highlights a broader issue affecting many students. In fact, one student suggested starting a petition, which led to the creation of this one.

We respectfully propose that the school consider improvements such as:

Holding assemblies indoors during roll call in classrooms so teacher can monitor students. And Exploring virtual based options when appropriate

At the same time, if changes are made due to this petition, students must also “behave respectfully in class” and not misuse the opportunity. A better system will only work if everyone contributes to a positive and focused environment.

I feel and for any student that have Claustrophobia because that can trigger we can keep year assemblies but not whole school assemblies. They are stressful and cause intrusive thoughts like me. When I sit in a hot or to cold I get intrusive thoughts which literally eat me alive. This also harm my daily life because all I might think during the holidays is “I am not excited to go back to school for assembly it just lingers within me” parents do yo really care for you children’s mental and physical wellbeing? If yes then sign this!
