End the Use of Cheerleaders in NFL Games

The Issue

I am a long-time football fan, but I have grown increasingly uncomfortable with the presence of cheerleaders at NFL games. These young women, often scantily clad and presented as objects for visual pleasure, are a stark reminder of outdated gender stereotypes that we should be working to dismantle. The NFL's use of cheerleaders contributes to the objectification of these women, many of whom are extremely young. This is particularly concerning given the demographic makeup of football fans.

The message this sends is clear: women's primary role in sports is for visual appeal rather than athletic prowess. But what does a group of provocatively dressed women gyrating on the sidelines truly have to do with the game? The answer is nothing.

According to a study by Purdue University, professional cheerleading reinforces harmful stereotypes about femininity and athleticism (Purdue University, 2016). It also found that it can contribute to negative body image among young girls who view these cheerleaders as role models (Purdue University, 2016).

It's time for us to move beyond these archaic practices and embrace an approach that respects all individuals involved in sport - regardless their gender or role within it. Let us demand that the NFL stop using cheerleaders during their games and instead focus on promoting female athletes based on their skills and talents rather than their physical appearance.

Please sign this petition if you believe in creating an equal playing field where everyone can enjoy sports without being subjected to unnecessary objectification or stereotyping.
