End the Secrecy: Tell Mental Health Patients Their Diagnosis and Involve Them in Care

End the Secrecy: Tell Mental Health Patients Their Diagnosis and Involve Them in Care
The Issue
Too often, people diagnosed with schizophrenia and other serious mental health conditions are not even told what their diagnosis is.
This is a violation of their basic human rights, and it would be unacceptable in any other branch of medicine.
Under current UK law and NHS policy, patients have the right to be involved in decisions about their care and to be informed of their diagnosis-yet this is routinely denied in psychiatric settings, especially when someone is sectioned or considered to lack capacity.
I am calling on the UK Government and NHS England to:
- Enforce the right for all patients to be informed of their mental health diagnosis, including schizophrenia.
- Mandate that mental health professionals clearly explain the diagnosis and treatment options in accessible language.
- Include patient advocates or family members (with consent) to support communication.
- Introduce consequences when this standard of care is not met.
Mental health deserves the same dignity, respect, and transparency as physical health.
Please sign this petition to demand fair, honest, and compassionate care for all mental health patients.
