Every day since I launched this petition at least one person sends me a private message or email outlining their own personal in-home care nightmare.
Shared with permission:
Ron, I had a terrible experience with Nurse next door with my mom’s care. I spoke with them for at least an our on the phone before hiring, to ensure they had a person centred care philosophy with dementia care. Fired them after the first visit and refused to pay the bill. It took the better part of a month for Mom to recover from the visit.
And…. Then she wanted free advice on how to improve their level of care.
Yes. More story is that they told her she was a widow, (an assumption they made, or intake simply checked an incorrect box) and for weeks she had to take me aside every day and tell me the grave news that my father was dead, and she grieved for him. She perseverated in this for a very long time. When he would call her daily, she would say ‘ I am so surprised to hear from you’ …. And then of course would promptly forget.
There is also a disrespectful and dishonouring personal care/ showering story I would not like to share.
Yes, it was shocking at first, but then every day I would just get him on the phone to reassure her. It lasted, of course, as long as the phone call, and then back to grieving we would go. I tried to explain to them the outcome of their actions, but they did not have enough experience with dementia to understand what I was saying. I suggested that perhaps we would just call them daily, every time she was perseverating on his passing….. so that they could understand, the woman did not get it, a huge time and heart suck.
IT'S TIME TO END THE NIGHTMARES NOW!
