End the IVF postcode lottery
The Issue
Fertility challenges are incredibly common, affecting around 1 in 6 people. Yet across England, access to NHS-funded fertility treatment can vary dramatically depending on where you live.
People with similar fertility needs and circumstances can face different eligibility criteria, different numbers of funded IVF cycles and different levels of support simply because they fall under different local policies.
NICE guidance recommends three full cycles of IVF for eligible people under 40, yet provision across England falls far short of this. Currently, 30 of England’s 42 ICBs offer just one funded cycle, with 19 of those offering only a partial cycle, meaning the number of embryo transfers included is limited even if more viable embryos are created during that cycle. Just two ICBs currently follow NICE guidance of three full cycles.
The postcode lottery also goes beyond the number of cycles available, with regional differences in eligibility criteria, age limits, waiting times, diagnosis, fertility preservation and psychological support.
Fertility Action is calling on the Government to establish a National Fertility Strategy for England and ensure fair and equitable access to NHS-funded fertility treatment in line with NICE guidance.
A national strategy should bring greater consistency, transparency and accountability to fertility care, so that where someone lives doesn’t unfairly determine the treatment and support available to them.
Where you live shouldn’t determine your chance to build a family. Please sign this petition and help us end the IVF postcode lottery.
