The Issue

This petition is about our collective responsibility to protect ocean life by holding municipalities, politicians, certain wildlife organizations, and big companies accountable for their actions. As a community that cares deeply about the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it, we should all be horrified at the recreational torture and killing of sharks that takes place annually at the "Deep Sea Rodeo" event in Alabama.

Various corporations, including Coca-Cola, iHeartRadio, and Academy, are among the event's sponsors, promoting a facade of wholesome family culture and entertainment. While supporting and allowing the unnecessary slaughter of fragile species in the name of "sports" and "entertainment" must be held accountable... The irony is both grotesque and distressing.

According to data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), some species of sharks are critically endangered, and such practices could accelerate their extinction. While some species of shark involved in this event, like bull sharks and tiger sharks, are not currently classified as endangered, their populations face significant threats and are listed as "Near Threatened" by the IUCN. This classification indicates that they are at risk of becoming endangered in the near future if the pressures on their populations continue. This also disrupts the ocean’s delicate ecosystem, impacting other marine life and potentially causing irreversible damage in the long term.

It's important to understand that sharks are an integral part of marine ecosystems. Top predators like them help control the population of other species, leading to a balanced ecosystem. Compromising their safety and lives for entertainment only disturbs this balance, contributing to the larger problem of environmental degradation (Source: National Geographic's *The Impact of Predator Loss*).

This needs to stop. We need your voice to send a clear message: these companies should not be allowed to tout family values in their advertising while simultaneously sponsoring animal cruelty. We must also send a message to the authoritative individuals involved. There are countless ways to enjoy and appreciate our oceans without causing harm to the creatures living within.

Beyond the reasoning of animal rights, it's also essential to remember that many of us hold the ocean dear to our hearts. The tranquility and vivid diversity of marine life that we love are slowly being eroded by actions such as these. The spirit of appreciation and respect for our ocean wildlife is being replaced by a harmful and distasteful form of entertainment.

Time has now called for a stop to this. It's the need of the hour to conserve our marine life, and doing away with such meaningless practices is a step in that direction. We need to end this inhumane event, protect our sharks, and take a step towards creating a more sustainable and compassionate future for these at-risk animals. Therefore, sign this petition in hope to put an end to the annual Deep Sea Rodeo event in Alabama. Let us stand together in the face of such practices. Let's protect the ocean and its dwellers! Please sign this petition to make our voices heard.
