This morning the Sentencing Council, which oversees all courts in England and Wales, have announced new measures for sentencing pregnant women!
The new policy makes pregnancy a ‘mitigating factor’, which means that it can reduce a prison sentence. Courts now have to consider the medical and mental health needs of a pregnant woman, the impact that prison could have on her child, and the fact that every pregnancy in prison is high-risk. We hope this results in more courts prioritising non-custodial alternatives to keep women in the community.
This is a huge milestone in the campaign to end the imprisonment of pregnant women. Thanks to each and everyone of you who signed. ❤️
