End the First Offender Program for Domestic Violence in Virginia

The Issue

The First Offender Program allows individuals charged with domestic violence to have their cases dismissed after completing certain conditions, such as community service or counseling. While rehabilitation is important, this program fails to hold abusers fully accountable and often denies justice to survivors.

Here’s why we must eliminate the First Offender Program for domestic violence cases in Virginia:

1️⃣ Domestic Violence is Not a "First-Time Mistake"
Domestic violence is rarely an isolated incident. Studies show that abuse is a pattern, and lenient sentencing allows abusers to continue harming their victims without lasting consequences.

2️⃣ Survivors Deserve Justice
Dismissing charges sends a harmful message that domestic violence is not taken seriously by the justice system. Survivors should not have to watch their abuser walk away with a clean record.

3️⃣ Accountability Leads to Prevention
Without meaningful legal consequences, abusers are more likely to reoffend. Strengthening our response to domestic violence cases helps prevent future harm and protects survivors.

4️⃣ Virginia Can Lead the Way
By eliminating the First Offender Program for domestic violence, Virginia can set a precedent for survivor-centered justice and ensure that all abusers face real consequences.

📨 Contact your legislators and urge them to stand with survivors by making real policy changes.

Survivors deserve more than a legal loophole for their abusers. It’s time for change. 🚨 #NoSecondChances #JusticeForSurvivors
