The Issue

I recently had the opportunity to visit Lamu during the holidays. What was meant to be a joyful experience turned into a heart-wrenching encounter with the harsh reality of animal cruelty. The donkeys, innocent and hardworking creatures, are subjected to brutal whippings, beatings, and abuse. Overloaded with heavy coral, sand, and concrete blocks under the scorching sun all day long without any respite is their daily routine.

These donkeys are not provided with adequate food or water. When their grueling day ends, they are left alone to scavenge through dumps for food where they often end up consuming plastic due to lack of options. To add insult to injury, these poor animals are often forced back into labor at night - an act that is both brutal and unjust.

The World Animal Protection reports that working equines like these donkeys support livelihoods of up to 600 million people globally (World Animal Protection). Yet in places like Lamu town and Manda island, they are treated as mere commodities rather than sentient beings.

This petition seeks your support in ending this cruel treatment towards these hardworking animals in Lamu town and Manda island. Let us stand together against such blatant animal cruelty; let us give voice to those who cannot speak for themselves; let us demand better care for these donkeys who work tirelessly for our benefit. Please sign this petition today because every signature brings us one step closer towards creating a humane environment for these innocent creatures.
