On July 6, 2026, Honduran security forces carried out a violent eviction in the Garífuna community of San Juan, Tela. Five members of the Organización Fraternal Negra Hondureña (OFRANEH) were detained: Deinor Osmany Mejía Arzu, Irbin Rene López Cortes, Carlos Enrique Fernández Guzmán, Onil Rigoberto Hernández Zelaya, and Sara Abigail Acosta.
They were later released, but they continue to face criminal proceedings for alleged aggravated usurpation while defending their ancestral territory. Human rights organizations have called for the charges against them to be dropped.
These five defenders should not be criminalized for defending the land, culture, and rights of the Garífuna people.
Garífuna ancestral territories have been recognized and protected by judgments of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Yet the Garífuna people continue to face dispossession, threats, violence, and criminalization while defending their communities and territories.
We demand:
• The immediate and definitive dismissal of the criminal proceedings against the five Garífuna defenders.
• An end to the criminalization and persecution of Garífuna land defenders.
• Full respect for the ancestral territorial rights of the Garífuna people.
• Full implementation of the judgments of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights protecting Garífuna territories.
• Protection for Garífuna communities and human rights defenders from further violence, threats, and harassment.
We call on the Honduran authorities to protect those who defend their ancestral lands—not prosecute them for doing so.
Please sign and share this petition. Let the Honduran government and the international community know that the Garífuna people are not alone.
