Lehigh Senior’s new principal has decided to ban any jacket with a hood on campus, resulting in a county wide ban on hooded jackets. The school recently sent out a email stating thats the jackets with hoods must be dropped off in iss and if the student continues to wear the hooded jacket it will result in further disciplinary actions (suspension or expulsion). The issue is not only are jackets with no hoods/ cardigans are expensive but also jackets are a basic clothing item. This so-called “arts school” is completely taking away our freedom to identify ourselves through our clothing. This ban was a way of solving the “no hood on your head” rule but it completely jeopardizes students saftey (cold weather/ classes). So many kids have expressed that they live in low income families and cannot buy new jackets or cardigans and because of this rule, they might not be able to protect themselves from cold classrooms or cold weather and not to mention rain. This upcoming school year we the students of Lehigh Senior and all kids/adults of lee county need to prove to the school that we have a voice. It is now resulted in further schools having this rule implemented. Their excuse for putting this rule in is because of a safety measure to identify students, but if that’s the case, then why are some people able to walk into the school without needing an ID card to be identified identifying students is such an issue then implement a rule where we need to use our ID cards instead of this jacket rule they already hand out ID cards that we don’t need to use.
