End the 50-Year Mining Moratorium in Rio Tuba: Secure Jobs and Sustainable Development
The Issue
For generations, sustainable mining has been the bread and butter of Barangay Rio Tuba, generating
employment, sustaining local enterprises, and propelling infrastructure and economic growth. But the
newly imposed 50-year mining ban now jeopardizes our future—stopping progress, destroying
livelihoods, and sending our community into economic instability.
Why This Petition Matters:
Mining is deeply integrated into our town’s growth, stability, and daily life. Losing it would have severe
consequences, including:
- Job Loss & Economic Decline: Thousands of workers and families rely on mining for their daily
sustenance. A moratorium means massive unemployment and financial struggle for our community.
A moratorium would mean mass unemployment and impoverishment of our community.
- Impact on Local Businesses: The mining industry supports small businesses, such as feasts, groceries, and transport services. Without it, these small businesses would be fighting for their survival.
- Lost Opportunities for Development: Part of the local hospitals, schools, and infrastructure are managed using earnings from mining. These two critical sectors would not be developing without ethical mining activities.
- Sustainable and responsible mining: Government support for improved environmental regulation and responsible mining methods instead of total prohibitions benefits both the environment and people's livelihoods.
Our call to all leaders: about time to take this issue back for reassessment, together with a disaster on employment and economic stability, the 50-year mining moratorium; to engage stakeholders with local communities to achieve a balanced approach to environmental protection and sustainable mining; and to have the go-get flexibilities that promote rather responsible mining practices than to outrightly banish it that threatens the livelihood and advancement.
Therefore, we, the undersigned, cannot afford to brute anymore but request immediate action to lift or revise the 50 years of mining moratorium and salvage the future of Brgy. Rio Tuba.
