The Issue

My son, Reginald “Reggie” Williams, was murdered at 32—shot seven times in the back—just two days before his youngest brother’s birthday. His killer obtained a gun through a straw purchase, exploiting a loophole that allows prohibited people to access firearms and places every family at risk.

In honor of Reggie, we are advocating for the passage of the Reginald Williams Law in Florida, which aims to crack down on illegal firearms transactions that continue to fuel violence in our communities. The proposed legislation will bolster penalties for those who engage in straw purchases, ensuring that offenders can no longer exploit loopholes to circumvent the law.

Statistics from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives indicate that straw purchasing is a significant contributor to gun trafficking, with thousands of firearms annually falling into the hands of criminals who would otherwise be prohibited from purchasing them. This practice not only endangers individuals but erodes the safety of our neighborhoods.

The need for such a law is urgent. By closing these loopholes, we can bolster our state's commitment to public safety and protect families from the tragic loss and trauma experienced by my own. We need action now to prevent similar tragedies from harming others.

Join us in calling upon Florida lawmakers to enact the Reginald Williams Law. By signing this petition, you are advocating for stricter monitoring and penalties for straw purchases of firearms. Stand with us in memory of Reggie and for the safety of our communities. Add your voice to ours, and together, let's enact the change needed to protect our loved ones.
