End Shark Finning Globally - Urge Governments to Ban This Inhumane Practice
La causa
An unimaginable act of cruelty is meted out to thousands of sharks every year - finning. This act, where fins from sharks are brutally cut off, leaving the rest of their body to suffocate and perish in the ocean, is not just an act of brutality, but also an act against the health of our planet. As someone deeply moved by this ongoing savagery and its impact on both the lives of the affected creatures and endangering the ecosystem, I am reaching out for your support to put an end to this horrific practice.
Shark finning has a significant negative impact on the shark populations worldwide. A report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) suggests that around one-third of the open-ocean (pelagic) sharks are threatened with extinction primarily because of shark finning (IUCN, 2009). Sharks play an essential role in maintaining marine biodiversity. Their dramatic decline destabilizes the ocean's complex ecological systems, which can lead to the decline of other species and detriment of marine habitats.
Furthermore, apart from the ecological implications, shark fins have little to no nutritional value. On the contrary, they harbor high levels of mercury, which poses serious health risks when consumed - including damage to the nervous system, particularly in pregnant women and young children (Environmental Defense Fund, 2019).
Our world leaders must enact strong, enforceable laws to ban shark finning and the subsequent trade worldwide. This is not just about preventing a cruel act. It's about preserving the balance of our oceans and, ultimately, ensuring the well-being of our planet.
Therefore, we are seeking 100,000 signatures to present to key global authorities to urge them to urgently implement these necessary changes. Please take a moment to sign this petition and share it with others. Together, we can end shark finning and safeguard these majestic animals. Sign the petition today.
