A new day, a new year, but for rodeo animals, just the same cruelty.
The Moruya Rodeo will be held today, just as it was on 1 January last year, when an injured steer was left for days without veterinary care.
Eurobodalla Shire Council, on whose land the rodeo is held, was asked to review the licence in light of this information. They chose NOT to publicly review the licence, NOT to cancel it, and NOT to add any conditions which might ensure such an event did not recur.
All they will say is that a vet was present last year and will be again. They run this line even though no one can explain why, if a vet was present, the injured animal was not given any vet care. You can see from the above photo, courtesy of Animal Liberation NSW, that one of this steer's horns is almost severed from his head. He was so distressed and frightened in the chute that he thrashed his head about, thus seriously injuring himself. This animal was loaded onto a truck, transported elsewhere, and was not attended to for days. This was not only contrary to NSW law, but also against the rodeo association's own code of practice!
Rodeos are inherently cruel, yet local governments all over New South Wales allow the use of their land for these activities. If they are like Eurobodalla Shire Council, they pretend that the pain, terror and injury risk are nothing to do with them.
It is way past time for the New South Wales Government to ban these outdated, abusive spectacles.
