Dear Supporters
I started this petition following the approval by my local council, in the face of overwhelming opposition, of a licence for the Rodeo Association of Moruya to use public land to hold their events.
On 1 January this year, the rodeo duly went ahead. A terrified steer thrashed about in the chute so much that he tore his horn almost completely from his head, as you can see from the picture above. The only reason we know about this is because dedicated volunteers from Animal Liberation NSW filmed the rodeo. But AL went further: it sent the footage to RSPCA NSW, who then investigated.
It turns out that that poor animal did not receive vet care before being loaded on a truck and transported for hours the next day. This was a breach of even the lax requirements of the NSW Code of Practice for Animals Used in Rodeo Events, and the contractor was issued two fines by RSPCA.
Given this information, Animal Liberation requested a review of the licence for the Moruya Rodeo. The Eurobodalla Shire Council has refused any sort of public consideration of the issues, has indicated it is not prepared to cancel or amend licence, and has not even provided reasons for its decision.
An attempt by two councillors to have the matter discussed at the last Council meeting before the next rodeo is held, on New Year's Day 2024, was shut down unceremoniously by the Mayor.
In light of this appalling lack of interest in the welfare of animals being abused on Council land, I ask that you help in Animal Liberation NSW's email campaign calling for a review or termination of this licence for cruelty. The link is here: Cancel or publicly review the Moruya Rodeo licence
Please share this message and help spread the word about the ugliness of rodeos.
Thank you for speaking up for animals.
