End Rabbit Sales at Rural King

End Rabbit Sales at Rural King
The Issue
As a former customer of Rural King and a proud owner of a free-range rabbit, I am deeply concerned about the sale of rabbits in their stores. It is disheartening to witness these intelligent and social animals being treated as mere commodities, often ending up in neglectful or abusive situations. Therefore, I urge Rural King to immediately cease the sale of rabbits in all their locations.
Rabbits are not suitable pets for everyone. They require specialized care, attention, and commitment that many potential owners may not be aware of or prepared for. Unfortunately, impulse purchases often lead to rabbits being abandoned or surrendered to shelters when people realize they cannot meet their needs.
According to the House Rabbit Society (HRS), an estimated 80% of pet rabbits are either abandoned or die within their first year due to improper care and lack of knowledge about their specific needs. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for responsible pet ownership education before acquiring any animal.
Furthermore, selling live animals in retail stores can contribute to impulse buying without proper consideration for the long-term consequences. Many customers may purchase rabbits on a whim without fully understanding what it takes to provide them with a safe and enriching environment.
Rural King has an opportunity here to take a compassionate stance by discontinuing rabbit sales. By doing so, they would join numerous other retailers who have already made this ethical decision based on concerns for animal welfare.
Several major pet store chains such as Petco and PetSmart have stopped selling live rabbits due to similar concerns regarding responsible ownership and animal welfare issues. These companies recognized that promoting adoption from local shelters instead is both humane and socially responsible.
By ending rabbit sales at Rural King stores, we can prevent countless innocent lives from suffering neglect or abandonment while also encouraging potential owners towards adoption from reputable rescue organizations where they can find loving companions who desperately need homes.
I implore Rural King to prioritize the welfare of animals over profit and take a compassionate stance by immediately discontinuing the sale of rabbits in all their stores. Together, let us create a world where animals are respected, cherished, and treated with the care they deserve.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Erin Gallagher and the other concerned customers
