Greetings!
Petition signatures have really slowed down! I hope that once you know what we now know, you will send this petition out to family and friends, and on all your socials.
We have learned recently that:
1) The University of Arizona Campus Police Department gave search access to its Flock Safety database to the United States Marshall Service (USMS). In January, the USMS became part of the ICE detention and deportation machine. This access was happening while the Chief Public Safety Officer was assuring us that they did not share information with federal agencies.
2) The Tucson Police Department is planning a mass surveillance pilot project with Flock Safety, to begin in January.
3) The Faculty Senate at the University of Arizona has created an ad hoc committee to investigate physical surveillance systems on campus and to develop recommendations.
4) The City of South Tucson City Council will meet again in January to discuss ending its contract with Flock Safety.
In Deflock Tucson, we understand that we are not just fighting a technology, but a culture that is being trained to believe that mass surveillance keeps us safe. Sometimes it feels that systems of mass surveillance are springing up faster than we can map them!
We are counting on you to be the Orwells of our time.
If you aren’t sure what your role is in all of this, come out and meet us at the Winter Fair of Resistance and Mutual Aid organized by the coalition Defend Tucson/Tucson Se Defiende (we are members of the coalition). That’s this Sunday at Reid Park, 10-1, at the bandstand. You will find us tabling there. Come by and chat!
