About three weeks ago the Fort Bend Independent School District here in Texas began to put the hammer down on some 19,000 families with delinquent school meal accounts. Instead of their regular hot meals, the children in these families were to receive cold cheese sandwiches and milk for lunch. I see this as punishing/pressuring parents THROUGH their children and I just don't get it. This is not some field trip where if the parent doesn't pay, their child doesn't go, this is FOOD! The ONLY children guaranteed a school meal in Texas are those children who qualify for free meals, everyone else must pay. If you get behind on your child's meal payments, then you'd better hope your child attends school in a compassionate district with a reasonable charge policy or they may not be served ANYTHING AT ALL! In a sense, those receiving cold cheese sandwiches and milk are the lucky ones - Welcome to Texas y'all!
