Donating to school meal accounts -

I have received several requests, and one phone call, from supporters asking how they could place money on this student's meal account, I believe that is an awesome gesture and it shows the American spirit of generosity. The school district in question only allows parents and/or guardians to contribute to student meal accounts because each student has a unique account number, there is no district "slush fund" for delinquent meal accounts. Unfortunately for privacy reasons I cannot identify this student or her school. As this is not an isolated incident, my recommendation to those with a desire to do something more to address this problem is to contact your local schools and ask if they have a fund that you might contribute to, I KNOW they will appreciate it. Even in locations where students are provided 'free' meals there will ALWAYS be students who are short on school supplies, shoes, clothing, who's backpack is tattered and worn, who cannot afford $5 for the class field trip, or $10 for a class picture; There are several ways that you might help the students at your local schools and the school administrators are best equipped to guide your efforts. All 50 states . . . and then some! This petition now has supporters from all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, France, South Africa, Puerto Rico and there was at least one comment from an APO AE (Army/Air Post Office - Armed Forces Europe) address. I may have missed a few locations, there are quite a few comments after all, and I will update my list as I notice new locations. Please feel free to forward petition links to your State and U.S. legislators, this is an election year and this issue might be something that they are willing to fight for.
