This week I've sent a direct e-mail to Texas representative Senfronia Thompson who authored H.B. 3562 last year, I have yet to receive a response, I plan to place a phone call to her office next week. I would like to gain her support regarding the amendment to this bill. Rep. Thompson represents Texas House district 141 which is just north of Houston, according to the Texas Tribune "In the Houston school district — the state's largest — breakfast has been made free for all elementary and middle school students," I wish that were the case for ALL Texas schools but the fact is in many Texas districts children are paying the consequences for delinquent school meal accounts and that needs to end.
The petition is currently more than 2/3 of the way to reaching 1,000 signatures but please do not let off the pressure, please continue sharing and urging your friends and family to sign and share as well. If you have children in school please send a copy to your child's teacher and principal, if you know members of the local school board send them links as well. If you are affiliated with a local YMCA, Boys and Girls Club or any other youth organization please share with other parents involved in those groups.
Withholding a meal from a 4 year-old and then forcing her to sit at the same table at which her classmates are enjoying THEIR meals reeks of child abuse! I simply ask that school nutrition service personnel provided meals to the students as that is there primary purpose, feed the children, then let the adults handle the adult affairs.
