Sadly the live cattle export trade from our city has continued to grow despite the majority of Australians wanting the government to end live animal exports. In the 2019 -2020 financial year 1,298, 438 cattle were exported from Australia, 395,628 of these from Townsville. Vietnam is now the main destination for cattle shipped from Townsville followed by Indonesia. The recent sinking of the Gulf Livestock 1 carrying dairy cows from New Zealand to China is a tragic reminder of the risks facing both the crew and animals who travel on live export ships.
