Hi everyone,
As a mother who lost my son, Vincent, I want to speak from the heart.
✊ What We Stand For
The #JustWhyMovement is more than a call for justice — it is a demand for accountability. We refuse to let murder be reduced to civil claims, settlements, or plea deals that insult the value of a life lost. We are here to challenge a system that too often protects the guilty and forgets the victims.
🕊️ Vincent's Legacy
Vincent was not just a name in a file. He was a son, a brother, an uncle, a nephew, a cousin, a friend, a light. This movement ensures that his name stands for change — that his story shakes the silence and awakens justice in every courtroom, every policy, every plea bargain negotiated without truth.
When someone takes a life, it shouldn’t be minimized, overlooked, or explained away—especially not by laws that fail to deliver justice. Yet in Maryland, House Bill 1190 (HB1190), known as the Youth Accountability & Safety Act, is once again back in session—reintroduced this year after several prior attempts.
On the surface, this bill is meant to give young people a second chance, by changing how felony murder applies to minors. But without serious amendments, HB1190 risks excusing those who knowingly participate in deadly crimes—even when they pull the trigger or play a direct role in a murder.
This hits home for so many of us. Families like mine—across Maryland and the U.S.—are left to grieve children who will never come home again, never text or call. While those responsible may receive drastically reduced sentences or plea deals that feel like betrayal. We’re told it’s “justice,” but it doesn’t feel like that.
What We’re Calling For:
📌 Accountability – Youth may be young, but when a life is taken, there must still be real consequences.
📌 Amendments to HB1190, including:
- Clarifying who qualifies as the “principal in the first degree” to ensure actual killers can’t hide behind the label of “youth.”
- Making the bill retroactive only after judicial review—not an automatic undoing of prior convictions.
- Adding a victim’s family notification clause, so we’re not blindsided by legal changes to our loved one’s case.
- Including restorative justice practices, not just leniency.
This isn’t about being “tough” on youth—it’s about being fair to families and true to justice.
🔗 Recent News shows just how complex this issue is becoming in our state. But complexity should never excuse inaction—or injustice.
It’s not just about law—it’s about lives.
