Tweet for Happy

After almost a lifetime in captivity, fourteen years of which she has been forced to live alone, 49-year-old Happy deserves to be freed from her imprisonment at the Bronx Zoo and sent to an elephant sanctuary.

Take action and help Happy by tweeting for her freedom this Tuesday, July 14th at 10 am PT/1 pm ET.

The goal of this Twitter day of action for Happy is to raise awareness about Happy’s plight and increase public pressure on the Bronx Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society—which manages the zoo—to send Happy to either The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee or the Performing Animal Welfare Society. The more people tweeting to #FreeHappy at the same time, the greater the chance that the tweets for Happy’s freedom will be amplified and garner widespread attention.

Case Update

On July 10th, the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) filed its appeal in its habeas corpus case on behalf of Happy.

The NhRP is asking the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department to recognize Happy’s common law right to bodily liberty, reverse the Bronx Supreme Court’s dismissal of Happy’s habeas petition, and remand the case with instructions to order Happy’s release to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee: “This Court has the duty to safeguard and uphold the fundamental common law liberty interest of autonomous beings,” writes the NhRP in its appellate brief. “As Happy is an autonomous being, this Court must recognize her right to bodily liberty protected by habeas corpus and order her freed.”
