End Hair Texture and Hairstyle Discrimination in Ohio
The Issue
As a Black-woman founded Ohio-based beauty company, we believe in the richness of diversity and the freedom of personal expression. We find it distressing and unacceptable that individuals can still face discrimination due to their hair texture and style. Everyone should be celebrated for who they are and should not have to conform their identity or appearance to be accepted in our society. The pattern of discrimination on the grounds of hair texture and style, often prevalent among Black and ethnic minority communities, is an egregious violation of personal rights.
Recent studies have shown that Black women are 1.5 times more likely to have reported being sent home from the workplace because of their hair (CROWN Research Study, 2019). The implications are far-reaching, affecting mental health, professional opportunities, and personal self-worth of those targeted. Our society and our state can do better.
We urge the Ohio legislation to follow the steps of states like California and New York by passing The CROWN (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act. Such an Act would make it illegal to discriminate based on hair style and texture in the workplace and in K-12 public and charter schools.
We appeal to the spirit of diversity and equality that we believe is endemic to Ohio and call upon our legislators to endorse this change. Make the statement that Ohio stands against discrimination in all its forms by making this act into law. Stand up for the rights and freedoms of all Ohio residents. Your signature can make a significant difference. Sign this petition now.
