End forced PTO use for hourly staff at Duke Hospital

The Issue

Imagine facing a medical condition that requires frequent appointments or having a family member who needs care covered under FMLA. Although life's challenges shouldn't dictate employment anxieties, a new policy at Duke Hospital forces hourly staff to deplete their paid time off (PTO) when their hours are reduced due to medical needs of themselves or their family members, unforeseen childcare challenges like school closures, or low census. This change disproportionately impacts individuals who must juggle medical needs or family responsibilities.

Duke Hospital’s current policy requires hourly staff to utilize their PTO when their work hours are reduced—a mandate that is not only unfair but causes undue stress and financial instability. This policy could remove crucial leave needed for personal health and family emergencies, leaving many employees vulnerable and anxious.

Many of us chose a healthcare career to serve others—and we depend on our employer to support us in return. Yet, Duke’s current mandate lacks consideration for those with ongoing medical conditions or families that require flexibility. Instead of penalizing staff during these unexpected downtime periods, we urge Duke leadership to allow us to voluntarily choose whether or not to use PTO. This change would enable us to preserve our PTO for its rightful purpose, thus allowing us to manage unexpected personal and family needs more effectively, as well as taking personal time off to rest and recharge.

This policy reversal is achievable and lies wholly within Duke’s leadership's authority to enact. By listening to its employees, Duke can reinforce a community-centric work environment where staff are empowered rather than penalized by policies beyond their control.

Join us in asking Duke leadership to reconsider and reverse this policy. Let's strive towards equity and work-life balance for all staff. Your signature can help advocate for this pivotal change. Sign the petition today to make your voice heard and support a fair working environment for everyone at Duke Hospital.
