End Drug Use in Denton ISD Schools

End Drug Use in Denton ISD Schools
The Issue
As a student in one of the many high schools in Denton ISD, I’ve noticed a reoccurring issue in both the junior high and high school level: Drug usage by students. There is no single way to reverse the effects of drugs on the world as a whole, but there is a way to help stop future drug use in the youth. There are current efforts to end drug usage in schools, but the efforts are oftentimes few and far in between, and resources to stop drugs generally go unused. By observing the student bodies both when I was in middle school and while I’m in Highschool, I’ve noticed an increasingly alarming amount of students vaping, smoking weed, and even going as far as trading and using cocaine and similar products. This is concerning. Not only do drugs hurt students associated with them, they hurt future generations of students exposed to their usage. So, what can be done to stop this? Implementation of vape detecting devices in areas where students commonly use vapes. This can be done by installing vape detectors in school bathrooms. Vape detectors are sensors that detect the chemicals in e-cigarette vapour, sending alerts to staff via text or email in order to stop student vaping. At the very least, if installing sensors cannot be done, creating an effort for staff to check bathrooms every so often for vapes can curb the usage of dangerous drugs in schools. Vaping not only ruins lives, it ruins educations. If we can make vape detection a norm in student bathrooms in high schools in middle school, we have a chance of changing the course of education for current and future students.
