Good Day – This photo was obtained in Nassau County Florida. 4,000 signatures and 150 comments from Nassau County residents will be meaningless without a good turnout at the Commissioners Meeting, May 8th at 6:00 PM at the James Page Center in Yulee, Florida. Remember wear red to show your support. If we are to make a case for zero unattended tethering we must be able to address this statement for the commissioners, “What’s wrong with tethering my dog outside for a few hours each day - - she loves being outside on her tether!” • Unattended dogs on tethers are vulnerable to attack from mean kids throwing rocks at them, aggressive stray dogs, bobcats, black bears, alligators, coyotes, and a host of other predators. A dog inside the home or in a fenced eclosure is better protected. • Unattended dogs on tethers are more likely to encounter a wild animal carrying rabies or a venomous snake. A dog inside the home, behind a fence, or in a suitable dog has less of such an encounter. • According to PETA tethered dogs are five-times more likely to bite children. In 2012, in Jacksonville, Florida an 18-month old child wandered into the neighbor’s yard and was mauled to death by a chained Rottweiler The fatal attack only took a few seconds. • Time limit tethering has been tried in dozens of other counties and has proven useless as it is almost impossible to enforce. Why do we have to make the same mistake that other counties have made? For those of you who are planning to speak, calling these issues to the attention of the commissioners will help promote the cause. If you can't attend the meeting, here is the contact information for the commissioners. Be sure to let them know your name and address. Thank you for standing up for the rights of those who cannot be heard.
