Good Day! Tell your commissioners you oppose the new tethering language! At the County Commission meeting next Monday, language will be introduced by County officials that will ATTEMPT to restrict, but not eliminate, unattended tethering in Nassau County. That language is severely flawed and dogs will remain chained 24/7/365. First, the language allows unattended tethering if the dog is within "visual range" of the owner or a responsible person(?). Meaning, if you can view the tethered dog(s) through a window in your home, you are compliant. Second, the dog can be tethered and unattended/unsupervised for 12 hours in a 24 hour period. Now, the owner can leave his house (window) for 12 hours and still be compliant. Third, dogs in agriculture areas on, "working farms" dogs can be tethered 24/7/365. Oddly, these dogs are the most likely to need a fence to protect them from stray dogs, bobcats, black bears, coyotes, snakes, alligators and rabid wild animals. Why should country dogs be treated differently than city dogs? All of these provisions have been attempted in other counties and have failed. Why would Nassau County even consider adopting these changes? The meeting is in the general assembly hall (Commissioners Chambers) at 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee, Florida. Wear an article of RED clothing to show your support. You must register to speak during the public comment portion of the meeting you have three minutes to make a statement. You do not have to be a Nassau County resident to speak. Prior to appearing at the meeting contact Nassau County Commissioners with the message below. Dear Commissioner: I want you to pass an ordinance that prohibits ALL unattended dog tethering in Nassau County. “Be humane, don’t chain. Use some sense and build a fence.” Thank you. your name your address, city, state, zip code District 1: Danny Leeper dleeper@nassaucountyfl.com 904.430.3868 District 2: Steve Kelley skelley@nassaucountyfl.com 904.556.0241 District 3: Pat Edwards pedwards@nassaucountyfl.com 904.335.0260 District 4: George Spicer gspicer@nassaucountyfl.com 904.568.3409 District 5: Justin Taylor jtaylor@nassaucountyfl.com 904.625.5624
