The Issue

As a concerned citizen, I am deeply troubled by a recurring injustice that affects federal employees and military personnel every time there is a federal government shutdown. While these dedicated workers often find themselves going without pay, the very lawmakers responsible for these shutdowns continue to receive their full salary without interruption. This situation is not only fundamentally unfair but also undermines public trust in government accountability.

The primary responsibility of Congress and the Senate is to pass a budget to ensure that our government remains functional and operational. When lawmakers fail in this essential duty, it is an injustice that they continue to receive compensation while our hardworking federal employees bear the brunt of the consequences. Our leaders should lead from the front; if they are unable to fulfill their primary responsibilities, they should not be financially rewarded at the expense of those they serve.

Therefore, I urge members of Congress to sponsor and support legislation titled the “No Pay During Government Shutdown Act.” This proposed law would ensure that members of Congress and the Senate do not receive a salary during any period of a federal government shutdown. Plus they should not get paid or any back pay when the government opens back up. By aligning their financial interests with the well-being of government workers, such legislation would create a powerful incentive for legislators to work collaboratively to prevent future shutdowns and restore confidence in their commitment to public service.

According to data from the Congressional Research Service, there have been 21 federal government shutdowns since 1976, affecting countless lives and disrupting essential services. Each shutdown leaves federal employees and military personnel facing uncertain futures, with bills to pay and families to support. It is time for lawmakers to take responsibility and demonstrate genuine leadership by standing with those who are most impacted by these shutdowns.

Join me in calling for this crucial change. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for fairness, accountability, and responsible governance.
