End catchment area restrictions for gp practices

The Issue

I have tried to join GP surgeries outside my catchment area that are near to my university and my daughters' schools and nursery, driven by dissatisfaction with the standard of care from my local GP practices. Over the past 30 years, I have attended three different GP practices in my local area, each time leaving due to poor practice, only to find myself trapped in the third one since there are no other suitable options available locally.

This isn't just my story; it's a reality for countless individuals across the UK who are tied to a postcode lottery when it comes to primary healthcare. The current system binds patients to GP surgeries within a designated catchment area, limiting their ability to choose a practice that aligns with their personal needs, such as proximity to work or university, or a preference for reliable medical care. This system, in essence, restricts our basic right to select a healthcare provider that can offer the best possible care.

Evidence shows that flexible registration policies can improve patient satisfaction and access to healthcare services. The British Medical Association has discussed the rigidity of the current system, which often forces people to remain with underperforming or inconvenient practices due to arbitrary geographical boundaries. For people working long hours or studying in different areas, the ability to choose a GP near their place of work or education is crucial for maintaining regular health check-ups and treatments.

It's time for action. We need to eliminate catchment area restrictions, allowing patients the freedom to register at any GP practice suitable for their needs. This will foster competition and improve accountability within GP surgeries, encouraging them to enhance the quality of care they offer. Further, it’s vital that complaint procedures are improved to ensure practices are held accountable for their service quality.

Join me in demanding change. Let’s call on the National Health Service and the relevant authorities to remove these outdated restrictions and reform the current system to make healthcare more accessible, equitable, and patient-centric. Please sign this petition to show your support and push for a system that prioritizes patients' needs over arbitrary boundaries.
