The Issue

For a long time now, something has weighed heavily on my heart. Every time I walk into a pet store and see rows of betta fish sitting in tiny plastic cups, I can’t help but feel sad. These fish are so vibrant and full of personality, yet they’re displayed in containers that barely give them space to turn around.

Bettas aren’t decorations — they’re living animals with instincts and needs. In their natural environment, they swim through warm, shallow waters filled with plants and places to explore. They’re curious, territorial, and surprisingly interactive. Seeing them confined to such small spaces is cruel and inhumane.

I understand that large retailers may see this as a simple, space-saving solution. But just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s right. If we truly care about animals, their well-being should come before convenience.

There are better options. Housing bettas in larger, filtered tanks would allow them to move freely and show their true colors and behaviors. Educating customers about proper tank size, heating, and care would also make a huge difference. When bettas are kept in appropriate setups, they’re more active, healthier, and live longer lives.

This isn’t about blaming anyone — it’s about doing better. These beautiful fish deserve more than the bare minimum. They deserve space to swim, to explore, and to thrive. I hope more people will speak up and encourage pet stores to rethink how bettas are displayed and cared for. Real change starts when enough of us decide that animals deserve better.

An adequate betta display that is space saving while also providing heated, filtered water.

A proper heated and filtered setup for betta fish that allows plenty of room to swim and explore.
