End At-Will Employment in Georgia and Nationwide: Demand Just Cause Protections for Worker

The Issue

WHO IS IMPACTED?
At-will employment affects millions of workers across the country, particularly in states like Georgia, where employees can be fired without cause or warning. This policy puts hardworking individuals at the mercy of employers who have the power to terminate employees for any reason, or no reason at all. Workers in retail, customer service, healthcare, and many other industries are disproportionately impacted. They live in constant fear of losing their jobs, even if they have done nothing wrong. Vulnerable workers—such as those reporting harassment, advocating for fair wages, or seeking accommodations—are especially at risk of retaliation under at-will policies.

WHAT IS AT STAKE?
If at-will employment continues, the job security of millions of Americans remains at risk. Employees will continue to face the stress and uncertainty of potentially losing their livelihoods with no recourse or justification. Without a fair and transparent process, employees have no protection against unfair terminations, discrimination, or retaliation. On the other hand, if we create a national "just cause" law, workers will gain peace of mind, knowing they are only fired for legitimate, documented reasons. This change would promote fairness, reduce workplace discrimination, and create a more stable and productive labor market.

WHY IS NOW THE TIME TO ACT?
Now is the time to act because workers are at a breaking point. Many people have endured the anxiety of losing a job without explanation or facing retaliation for standing up for their rights. The ongoing conversations about worker rights and job security, especially in the wake of economic uncertainty, have shed light on the need for systemic change. With your support, we can push legislators to end at-will employment and implement just cause protections. This is a critical opportunity to level the playing field for employees nationwide and ensure fair treatment for all workers.
