You may have found it ironic that I used an artificially generated image as the thumbnail for an anti-machine petition here on Change.org. I do! The goal is simple. A.I. is here to stay. That much is known. What is not so clear is the fact that something is wrong. People are hurting themselves and those around them with messages of hate and obscenity online. This has already caused at least two men around the world to take their own lives. One of them was only in middle school! The problem is simple, and that much we should be able to agree on. The solution, on the other hand, seems to be hidden inside some quantum equation or a clouded supercomputer trend. It has never been that simple. Film producers have taunted young children with films about haunted social media websites and other cyberbullying phenomena for the last twenty years. It did not start yesterday, and it will not end tomorrow. All we can do is try our best and take preventative measures at the base level. My observation has led me to believe that whistleblowers are not enough. Thousands of overpaid developers and engineers have made it clear that the loss we are facing is worth the outcome, in their opinion. Unlike them, we should be careful in our message and raise awareness with positivity in our hearts and truth in our minds. Think before you speak, and be gentle with your actions. Sharing this petition with those who have been adversely affected may be a good way to get the ball rolling, but we must remember that we cannot single anyone out here. We are not fighting the average bully. We are dealing with a machine. There is no right or wrong answer until the program is complete. Be kind. Be honest. Most importantly, be yourself. It will get better. Thank you for helping to make a difference where it matters most!
