The Issue

Every summer weekend, a major tragedy is waiting to happen on the A428 between Cambourne and Hardwick.
This stretch of road is a busy, high-speed dual carriageway linking Cambridge to Milton Keynes and beyond. It is heavily used by cars, large lorries, and buses traveling at maximum speeds. Despite the clear danger, this active highway is regularly used to host competitive cycling events during the peak summer months. Mixing high-speed, heavy vehicular traffic with cyclists on a 70mph dual carriageway is an accident waiting to happen.
We should not have to wait for someone to be killed or seriously injured before action is taken.
The Danger We Witness Every Weekend
The safety risks on this stretch of road are escalating. Drivers and witnesses regularly see terrifying near-misses, including:
Sudden Swerving: Cars in the left-hand lane being forced to brake hard or veer sharply into the fast-flowing right-hand lane to avoid cyclists, nearly causing catastrophic rear-end collisions.
Dangerously Close Passes: Large vehicles and cars passing inches away from cyclists because heavy traffic prevents them from safely pulling over.
This environment is entirely unsuitable for cycle racing. It endangers the participants, terrifies everyday motorists, and puts lives at risk.
Our Demand
We call upon the local county councils, Highways England, and Cambridgeshire Constabulary to launch an urgent safety review into these events.
We demand that these competitive cycling events are either stopped entirely on the A428 or relocated to closed circuits or safer, more appropriate routes.
Please sign this petition to demand proactive action before it is too late. Let’s protect both our motorists and the cyclists.
