The Issue

Developers want to bring hundreds of luxury condos, a hotel, marina and restaurant to Lower Cane Island. This proposal is gravely concerning and stands to negatively impact the environment and quality of life for Beaufort County residents. Upper Cane Island is already developing a large scale development that will negatively impact this area.

Join us in urging the Trask family to help realize a different future for Lower Cane Island. By working with the City of Beaufort and County, funds from the Beaufort County’s Greenspace program could be used to compensate the family and safeguard the natural resources and quality of life for residents.

Simply put, Islands Causeway is a narrow, winding road that cannot handle the type of dense development that is envisioned for Lower Cane. This out-of-scale development would result in major traffic bottlenecks including long queues at the Lady’s Island Dr. Intersection. Additionally, road widening may be necessary to accommodate additional traffic, potentially impacting the saltmarsh that is held in the public trust.

Likewise, small tidal creeks around Cane Island may be impaired by increased stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces, while wildlife that reside on the Lower Cane Island such as deer, wild turkey, and bald eagles may be displaced.

We urge the Trask family to help realize a different future for Lower Cane Island that would preserve what makes it a special place. It is not too late for the owners to do the right thing and leave behind a conservation legacy, protecting the land for future generations to enjoy. Please join us in calling on the Trask’s to work toward a conservation outcome for Lower Cane Island by signing this petition.
