Background: Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) has historically shared per pupil tax revenue to fund students’ participation in Operation Fresh Start’s (OFS) Legacy program, a year-round alternative education program for students whose learning style does not align with the traditional school setting.

On August 3, 2023, MMSD presented OFS with a contract for July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024 with a 52% budget cut. That level of funding was exhausted for students currently enrolled as of September. Students being referred to Legacy by family members and school counselors are at a record high.

With the approval of a budget amendment, OFS and MMSD can continue serving this population of young adults to the fullest capacity.

This petition will be presented to the Madison Board of Education’s Operations Work Group meeting on Monday, October 30 at 5:00 p.m. by member Savion Castro. Support our young adults in Dane County! Sign the petition today to encourage MMSD to approve a budget amendment to return funding to levels similar to previous years!
