Enact Legislation to Make Deliberate Misinformation by Government Officials Illegal

The Issue

Drawing from a deeply personal perspective, I observe every day the unsettling reality of government officials bending the truth, misleading, or even shamelessly lying to the public through various platforms including but not limited to live TV or public meetings. This practice is not demonstrated by a single party or select individuals but appears to be a widespread issue on both sides of the aisle. It's a matter of public trust and respect and our democracy suffers just as gravely as our peace of mind.

Effective governance is built on trust and honest communication. However, according to a report by Pew Research Center, about 64% of Americans say made-up news has led to confusion about basic facts of current events. This is a troubling development endangering the functioning of our democratic system.

We propose the enactment of clear and enforceable legislation that makes the dissemination of deliberate misinformation by government officials, across all levels and positions, illegal. We are in desperate need of a policy that enforces truth in public governance, holds responsible parties accountable, and discourages persistent lying as a tool of policy-making or public persuasion.

In the interest of restoring integrity, promoting transparency and re-establishing faith in our democratic system, we call upon lawmakers to treat this issue with the urgency it deserves and act upon it. Your signature is a step toward influencing systemic change and ensuring our government representatives serve us truthfully. Please, sign this petition and join the fight for truth in governance.
