Enact Legislation Requiring Online Retailers to Clearly List Location of Manufacture
The Issue
Like many American consumers, I do most of my shopping online today - embracing the convenience and variety of products it has to offer. However, I frequently find myself purchasing items unaware of their origin, unable to discern where these goods are manufactured. This not only prevents me from supporting American manufacturing, but also inadvertently has me supporting industries in countries where human rights and environmental regulations are lax or non-existent.
Current legislation requires brick and mortar stores to clearly disclose the origin of their products, providing consumers with the crucial information necessary to make informed decisions. Unfortunately, online retailers are not held to the same standard, creating a sort of informational black hole for e-consumers. A Consumer Reports survey in 2019 revealed that 60% of American consumers would prefer to buy American-made products, signaling a clear demand for more transparency in product origins (Consumer Reports, 2019).
In response to this, we demand that U.S. policymakers implement legislation requiring online retailers to clearly and prominently display the manufacturing location of each product they sell. Such a measure would not only level the playing field between brick and mortar stores and e-commerce, but also empower consumers to make more informed purchasing decisions that reflect their values and preferences.
