Friends of “CLEAN” adoption reform, The new feature film “Lion” is based on true events, in foreign countries. It chronicles the unyielding force that compels many adoptees to seek, and celebrate, their own origins. The fact that this force is adamant for many is, perhaps, one great way to understand why knowing one’s roots is a human right that demands to be universally respected, without restrictions, by all governments. That is the right side of history. Last night, I had the privilege of letting Brooklyn moviegoers know about our petition, so they can help stand up for the human and civil rights of New York born adoptees. As they accepted our flyer many were, as usual, shocked to learn that New York adult adoptees have been denied access to their own original birth certificates and complete health history since the 1930s. And that this dangerous institutional discrimination, by extension, denies the children of adoptees their medical and cultural birthright too. Several thought these problems, and the sort of compromises we see to our bill in Albany, only existed a world away, and in the movies. Not so. But, happily, many expressed a motivation to learn more about our cause so that, together, we can do something about restoring, and making law, the widely supported, bipartisan and “clean” NY Bill of Adoptee Rights. Our petition asks that this happen as early as next week, with the new legislative session. Why? Because New Yorkers deserve to get adoption reform right the first time. Perhaps you will see “Lion” while it remains in theaters or soon. Either way, please continue to share this petition with family and friends. If we all find one new supporter, we can jump from 2,000 to 4,000 speaking for our appeal! Adoptee rights are human rights. Human rights are adoptee rights.
