On a tragic day, Pitt County Sheriff's Office lost one of their loyal members, K9 Chilli, who succumbed to heat exhaustion after being left in a patrol vehicle without proper cooling measures. Chilli was more than just a dog; he was a dedicated officer who served with pride and loyalty. His untimely passing is a stark reminder of the dire need for enhanced safety measures for our four-legged law enforcement officers.

K9 officers play a crucial role in law enforcement, tirelessly working alongside human officers to protect and serve the community. However, the environment within police vehicles can quickly become dangerously hot, putting these devoted animals at risk. It is unacceptable to allow this avoidable tragedy to happen again to any K9 officer.

We propose a new law in North Carolina that mandates specific safety measures for vehicles transporting police dogs. This law should require every vehicle used to transport a police dog to be equipped with a heat sensor monitoring device. This crucial safety mechanism would:
 
1. Monitor the internal temperature of the vehicle continuously.
2. Issue an audible and visual alert within the vehicle when the temperature reaches 85 degrees Fahrenheit, ensuring immediate action can be taken.
3. Remotely notify the responsible law enforcement agency, so they can respond promptly.
4. Automatically open the vehicle door to release the K9 officer if the temperature continues to rise, ensuring their safety.

Implementing this law will save lives and honor the memory of K9 Chilli, ensuring his sacrifice propels a positive change. It is imperative that we provide K9 officers with the protection they deserve, recognizing them as valued members of the law enforcement community.
