Enact a moratorium on data center development in Rosemount, Minnesota
The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the potential for a second data center development in Rosemount, Minnesota. This issue is not just a matter of economic development as it holds the potential to negatively impact my quality of life and that of my neighbors. There is too much risk related to rising utility rates, potential degradation of water quality, and increased noise and light pollution.
Data centers, while essential for modern technological infrastructure, require enormous amounts of energy and water to function. Current impact analyses for a second data center in Rosemount are already underway, using simulated data instead of actual data from the first facility once operational. The first impact analysis, related to water system capacity, is already complete even as residents are receiving notices related to degrading water quality.
In addition to these environmental concerns, economic benefits from the construction of data centers across the country is mixed and the presence of data centers also brings about significant noise and light pollution. The hum of machinery and bright lights disrupt the peace of surrounding neighborhoods, affecting the quality of life for many.
The situation is urgent, and we need our city council to act by enacting a moratorium on new data center development projects until comprehensive studies are conducted using real data from the under-construction facility. These studies should focus on the cumulative impact of this data center on our resources and environment, with findings made publicly accessible.
By signing this petition, I am standing up for a sustainable future and helping to protect the quality of life in our city. Let’s urge our city council to prioritize the welfare of its residents and environment.
