Enact a Lorain City Ordinance to Ban Conversion Therapy

The Issue

Conversion therapy, a harmful and discredited practice that attempts to change an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity, is still legal in many parts of the United States. In Lorain, OH, there are currently no laws prohibiting this dangerous practice. This needs to change.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, conversion therapy can lead to depression, anxiety, and self-destructive behavior. It is also rejected by every mainstream medical and mental health organization for decades (American Psychological Association). Yet despite these facts, it remains a threat to our community members.

The Ohio Capital Journal wrote an article that emphasizes that the prohibition of conversion therapy not only acts as a proactive step but also carries the potential to significantly reduce the incidence of suicides among the LGBTQIA+ youth. The analysis delves into the interconnected benefits of such a ban, shedding light on the broader positive impact on the well-being of the community's young LGBTQIA+ individuals. This can have a positive effect on Lorain’s community as a whole!

Currently there is a draft ordinance that both condemns and prohibits conversion therapy that is specifically designed for Lorain and needs to be reviewed by Lorain’s clerk of council to see if it indeed would prohibit conversion therapy.

We call on the Lorain city council to pass an ordinance banning conversion therapy in our city. By doing so, we can protect our citizens from this harmful practice and ensure that everyone in our community feels safe and accepted for who they are.

Stand with us today by signing this petition urging the Lorain city council to ban conversion therapy now!
