Empower Women's Safety: Legalize Stunguns and Mace in Canada

The Issue

We, the concerned citizens of Canada, hereby urge the Canadian government to take immediate action towards ensuring the safety and well-being of women across our nation. We firmly believe that by legalizing the possession and use of stunguns and mace for self-defense purposes, we can empower women to protect themselves effectively against potential threats.

Canada prides itself on being a progressive nation that upholds gender equality and individual rights. However, current laws restrict women from carrying non-lethal self-defense tools such as stunguns or mace. This limitation leaves many vulnerable to physical assault, harassment, and violence without adequate means to defend themselves.

Indigenous women are most at risk with almost 6 in 10 (56%) of Indigenous women having experienced physical assault at the hands of men compared to other demographics at 34%. As well they are more at risk of sexual assault at almost half of Indigenous women (46%) experiencing sexual assault compared to other demographics at 33%. Indigenous women are also 12 times as likely to go missing or be murdered in Canada than other women. That’s part of the reason I made this petition and why it’s so important.

Here are some relevant facts supporting our petition:

1. Rising Crime Rates: According to Statistics Canada's 2019 report on police-reported crime rates, incidents of sexual assault increased by 15% compared to the previous year. This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for empowering individuals with effective self-defense tools.

2. Ineffectiveness of Traditional Methods: While personal safety measures like self-defense classes are valuable skills for women, they often prove insufficient when confronted with physically stronger assailants or multiple attackers. Stunguns and mace offer an additional layer of protection that can help level the playing field in dangerous situations.

3. Success Stories from Other Jurisdictions: Numerous countries around the world have already legalized stunguns and mace for personal defence purposes with positive outcomes.

4. Responsible Use through Regulation: We acknowledge concerns about potential misuse or accidents involving these tools; however, regulations can be implemented alongside legalization to ensure responsible ownership and usage practices through mandatory training programs or licensing requirements.

By granting Canadian women access to non-lethal self-defense tools like stunguns and mace, we can empower them to protect themselves in dangerous situations while promoting a safer society for all. It is time for our government to prioritize the safety and well-being of its citizens, especially women who face disproportionate risks.

We call upon the Canadian government to review existing legislation and enact necessary changes that legalize the possession and use of stunguns and mace by responsible individuals. Together, let us take a significant step towards fostering a society where women feel secure, confident, and empowered.
