Fix the Lights at Wilson Skatepark in Compton, CA

The Issue

I am reaching out to you to requests lights at Wilson Park/Skatepark. I was able to speak to many residents and all have agreed in the benefits of having lights installed in our city. As of now, there have not been any lights for an extended amount of time. This issue rises a concern for many residents that our community and parks are not safe during the nighttime. This matter requires your immediate review and signature.

Due to this global pandemic, many people have remained safe and socially distanced from one another. Many have taken up exercising in different forms such as taking walks, skateboarding, or even playing basketball for physical and mental health. However, without lights in our communities’ parks, the city will remain unsafe, and many individuals will continue to feel vulnerable as they partake in these activities.

There has been an abundance of instances where homeless people have slept at the park, people doing drugs, countless amounts of drive by shootings, graffiti everywhere, and people ultimately getting hurt by not being able to see where they are going. Implementing lights in our city’s parks and recreational areas can easily avoid any liabilities than can and will arise from not having lights at all. Furthermore, lights can keep trouble out of our community. If the city is concerned about costs and having someone hired for that designated job. Motion sensor lights can be very advantageous. For example, Watts skatepark has motion sensor and solar panel lights. These lights serve a huge benefit when people walk around the park and try to exercise. The crime rate drops drastically as a basic human necessity is fulfilled.

Our community needs to unite with one another for a change. For the years that I have lived in this community, I have seen and experienced devastating occurrences. I am grateful and thankful to be alive and have the opportunity to ignite a change in this world, even if it is one life at a time. I know Compton has the capabilities to become just as good if not better than the communities that surround us. It has been a shame to drive down ten miles in any direction from the city to find a well-lit, clean, and prospering community. Even more of an unfortunate reality to come back home to garbage, graffiti, and drive by shootings.

I hope I have the support from you as well as the community council to make a change one step at a time. With your support, we can make our community that much safer for ourselves and for future generations to come. Please make these lights a priority. Go Compton! Thank you everyone!
